I made this low-poly character a few months ago, mainly because I've always liked low-poly stuff and hadn't modeled in a long time, but also because I wanted to make a custom character to try out in some tutorials for Unity. I think Unity's a pretty cool piece of software to develop 3d games on, and although I don't have much programming language experience, it makes things fairly easy to understand. I went through one of the '3rd person platform game' tutorials and came out with this little demo thing for Huey:

The Arrow Keys move Huey, and the Space Bar makes him jump. You can wall jump too. I'm also working on a first-person look mode, and figuring out how to add in fidgets while idling.

I was inspired by Mario Galaxy 2 for this one:

It's been a while since I've done a completed illustration. This was done entirely in Flash, using a Wacom tablet for drawing.

I also put together a gif slideshow of my process on this one. I go through a lot of refinements in the sketching stage, since it helps me really know exactly what on earth I'm drawing when I get to the final lines.

The Dominance War II

This past month or so was the second year of the Dominance War, a 3D game character modeling competition spanning four online CG forums; Polycount, CGChat, CG Society, and 3DTotal. I work at a game company, but I mostly do animation, so I thought entering would be a good chance to brush up on my modeling skills. I heard about the war from two of my co-workers, Gabe Jackson and Eli Heuer, both of whom entered as well. I went for the Polycount side - you can see my progress thread here.

There were a few things I was taking on for the first time with this model, mainly Normal Mapping, which can give a low-poly model the appearance of something much, much higher-poly if done correctly. It was used extensively in Doom 3, and is becoming an industry standard. You can see the Normal Map below with the other textures, it's the blueish-purple thing, and it's job is to control how light effects the model to create the illusion of added detail and smoothness.

I designed General Atrox, battle-ravaged warrior from an ancient and endangered race of giant lizard. They once ruled the galaxies with thousands of colonies on various planets, but have since been systematically eradicated by an unknown force. General Atrox hopes to find revenge somewhere on the battlefield of the second Dominance War and bring his race back to glory.

Here's a scene in which Munchy, icon of popular breakfast cereal Crunchy Bunches, shields innocent and hip children from harmful radioactive waves with his very own cereal. Thus is born: Glow-in-the-Dark Frosted Crunchy Bunches. Available for a limited time only.

The Untamed West

Unlike a lot of artists I know, I tend to sketch a lot of the same thing over and over for quite a while, rather then skip around stream of consciousness style. Right now that same thing seems to be this cowboy character.

I like to think he's some sort of trick shooter, by the clever name of Rick Shay, who abhors violence but can split a hair off your head looking through a mirror at forty paces in a rainstorm. At least that's what I like to think.

Mario Kart

I've found myself playing a lot of Mario Kart DS lately. It can be sort of addicting. I ended up sketching Mario, and he's pretty fun to draw. There's a few things I think could still be better about this piece. For one, I wanted more line of action to show up in the characters, but it got a bit lost when I added the blocky karts. The sense of movement also isn't quite as fast as I envisioned. I didn't spend enough time on the background, so it's a little boring. Line work could be better too. Beyond that, I'm pretty satisfied with the volume, detail and likeness of the characters.

Crunchy Bunches is a cereal for kids, which is the best kind of cereal, because they have mascots. Munchy's goal in life is to be the mascot of Crunchy Bunches, and he does it quite well indeed. He's always on the hunt for the best new flavors for his cereal bits, or marshmallow shapes or frosting colors to make his cereal the best ever. Sometimes his plans get interrupted by The Growlies, who only want hunger and famine to prevail at the breakfast table, but Munchy always gets the best of them thanks to the ultimate power of Crunchy Bunches brand breakfast cereal.

I've been working on a re-design of this character from his first appearance in these comics.

This was done in an early version of Painter, and I'm not too experienced in the program (or painting in general, for that matter), so it isn't all that it could be. I'm happy with it mostly, though. I like the atmosphere of it, and I think it'd be cool to have a secret treehouse with a view like that.

This is a different style then I usually do; I wanted to try some different techniques gleaned from various inspirations. This was all done in Photoshop, unlike most of my latest work which I used Flash for. I also tried a more painterly way of coloring it then I normally do. Another thing is that I tried to rely less on cartoon drawing conventions, and come up with unique ways of interpreting the face in a cartoony way.

Call him Captain Cornflake.

A friend of mine where I work created this character for an independent game project he'd like to do eventually and asked me if I could design him based on a few sketches he had made. He's Captain Cornflake and he dispatches injustice with his trusty super spatula. Crazy, I know, but it makes about as much sense as an Italian plumber in a land of mushrooms, at least. At some point I'd like to start on a 3D model of this guy for the actual game.

Electronic Entertainment Exposition 2006

Or E3, as some call it. It's an industry expo for video games and computer entertainment. This was the first year I went to the show, and it sure was fun. I traveled down from Seattle to L.A. for about a week with some friends from work and tried out all the unreleased games, stood in lines, got hypnotized by flashing neon everywhere, and got all touristy around Hollywood.

The prestigious Olive Manor Motel. Enjoy the complementary coat hangers in the beds and water-less pool!

We got some drinks at the famous Smoke House the first night and caught a good stand-up comedy show there. Warner Bros. Studios was near the motel, and we spotted the iconic home of Yacko, Wacko and Dot.

The LA subway was eerily deserted. It's gigantic size and lack of crowds seemed strangely dramatic.

We arrive. Notice the tanker truck filled with Mountain Dew. "Gamer Fuel," apparently.

The Nintendo Wii (previously Revolution) was definitely a highlight of the show. I'm really excited about the new Super Mario Galaxy game coming out for it.

We also stopped by the "I am 8-bit" art gallery, which showcased some awesome art based off ancient video game history.

Our last stop was sunny and colorful Venice Beach. I expected it to be crowded on a Saturday afternoon, but because of it's vast size, it still had tons of space. Interesting people sure do hang out at Venice Beach. It was a great end to a great trip.

Stuff I've Done Part 1

My first animation job was at a very small and new company called Moral Productions. Their first project was a CG movie on DVD called “Agents of the Spirit: The Phantom Influence.” It was in much the same vein as “Veggie Tales,” and featured a crack team of highly trained secret agent fruits. They would fight evil-minded bugs to protect kids from doing bad things. It sounds pretty weird, and it was, but it was also pretty funny and action packed sometimes.
Moral was just starting out, and didn’t have a lot of experience or resources. There were eight employees and four computers, meaning I and three others worked the night shift. Most people there were straight out of school like me, so the whole project was something of an extended learning experience. As such, the film’s art was never anything to write home about, though it did have it’s moments. Unfortunately, Moral has since closed down, but I’m sure our team could’ve made the sequel ten times better from what we learned on the first one.

We originally planned to put extra content on the DVD, one of those features being redesigns of the characters by each artist. Here are my versions of the Agents:

Moral’s website for Agents of the Spirit isn’t around anymore, but in looking it up I found it listed on imdb.com. Of course, this means I’ve made it big since only famous people get their own imdb page.

3D Rabbit

A while back, I made this Rabbit character in 3D studio Max and animated him for a 10 Second Club submission. It was fun to do, and I think it turned out really well.

I thought he could use a little more personality, though, so I gave him some accessories.

Goggles and scarves will make any character look cooler. The giant wrench just seemed appropriate, somehow.

Dabbling in Watercolor

Watercolor has always been my favorite painting medium. It has an elegant simplicity to it, and I like the "stained" textural quality it gives. I haven't worked with it much, however, so I'm still learning how best to use it. Here's a couple experiments of mine in watercolor:

I've found that it's easy to over-do watercolors, so it's best not to add more then two layers of color on an area. The color also starts out darker and gets lighter as the brush goes along, so starting your brush in areas that might be shaded can be helpful too.

Monsterland Sketches

Here's some sketches for my comic, Monsterland:

I think this was the best costume for Tracy. I always tried to have her wear different clothes in each comic, since it's such a cliche that cartoon characters always wear the same thing every day.

I tried to design Timber so that he could be drawn with varying levels of detail. Sometimes I would try to challenge myself by drawing him as realistically as I could do, other times I would get more creative with a simplified version.

Here's a more simplified version.

At one point, I wanted to do a story where Timber got wings. One of the inspirations for Monsterland, as a world, was Super Mario World. The funny, weird, magic, cartoony world in that game was the kind of way I wanted Monsterland to feel. I always thought it was cool when Yoshi got wings, so I wanted to see what would happen if Timber got them too.

The Phantom King was the rarely seen bad guy in Monsterland. He believed that monsters weren't scary any more and humans didn't fear them. Fear meant respect, so he was out to change all that. Tracy's ability to travel between the human world and Monsterland with her amulet was his key to bringing fear back to the human world once again.

An Old Character

I’ve always loved designing characters, even when I was a kid doodling in my math homework. I’d come up with personalities and names for them and draw them in all the different angles and poses and expressions I could think of.

One of the first characters I ever came up with was a cartoon dog, who I never really did come up with a proper name for, though he’s been the most constant thing I’ve ever drawn in my life. Some time in late grade school I was inspired when I found out I was born in the year of the dog, so, logically, I decided to draw one. I liked the character enough to continue doodling him all throughout my middle school and high school careers, all the while refining his design as I got better at drawing. Luckily, I kept a lot of the better sketches of the guy, so you can see his eventual evolution in this handy chart:

There were two major influences on the character. One of my all-time favorite cartoons was, and still is, “Rocko’s Modern Life.” It doesn’t take a lot of effort to see the two of them have the same head. Yeah, I stole it, but I really like that head.

The other influence that came later, and was even more important in shaping how I draw in general, was Bugs Bunny. I always liked Bugs, but it wasn’t until I saw a model sheet of how he was constructed and drawn, that I was inspired to add more dimensionality, volume, detail, and anatomy to my characters. Even now, I don’t consider a character “fully” designed unless I figure out those kind of things about it.

Over the years, this character’s personality and back story have changed a bit, but here’s him in a nutshell: He grew up in the pound, and as a result, knows the whole place like the back of his hand. Ever see the show “Parker Louis Can’t Lose?” It’s kind of like that, but with a dog, and in a pound. He knows everybody there, can get out and in at any time through an elaborate series of secret tunnels, and is always operating crafty schemes without the dog-catcher’s knowledge. Also, about the name. I spent so long not giving him a name, it’s hard to come up with one now, but I have two options I’m thinking about: Jinx or Boomer. I think Jinx fits him pretty well, mostly.

In the last few years, I haven’t drawn this guy much, but I thought I’d bring him back for a new and improved finished piece:

Test in Flash

I did this quickly in Flash when I first bought the program, just to test it out. I think that since I mostly do 3D animation, my favorite things to do in 2D are the things which are so difficult in 3D, like squash&stretch, smearing, and extreme distortions.

Monsterland

Monsterland is a monthly comic I did for a little over a year. The main character is Tracy, a kid who finds a magic amulet that, when she puts it on, transports her to the world of monsters. Some of those monsters are mean and scary like we know of them, but others are friendly-- like Timber, the big blue thing Tracy meets when she gets there. Each month I tried to do a different style for the comic, so those inconsistencies are intentional. Check it out:
